Lorne Patterson is Graphic Monthly’s Print Manager columnist in which he discusses proven management processes that all print shops can adopt. He was managing director of Bowne’s financial printing operations across Canada, where he aligned the operations in Montreal, Toronto, Calgary and Vancouver into a national printing network. Since 2006, he has run his own consultancy from Vancouver specializing in strategic management and operations skills for smaller print shops.

CPISC - Organized the Vancouver validation session for the Canadian Printing Industry Sector Council's Skills and Technology Roadmap.

Market Research - Investigated the possibility of opening a bindery operation in Alberta. Interviewed major printers in Calgary and Edmonton to determine the feasibility of opening a facility in the region.

Offset and Beyond - Moderated the "Implementing Quality Systems"panel at the Offset and Beyond 2007 Management and Technical Conference sponsored by the Web Offset Association and PIA/GATF inToronto.

Strategic Plan - Mid Size Printer - This project involves working on a strategic plan to cover a family buyout and then implementation of a complete Balanced Scorecard around the plan.The assignment involves the National Quality Institute’s excellence model, lean manufacturing, balanced scorecard, many problem solving tools, customer supplier alignments and acting as a coach for the President.

Project Management – New Media - We worked with New MediaBC to develop a Project Management template to define a process for their on going projects including deliverables, people, resources, cash, and gantt charts.

Cellular Work Systems - Case study presentation at the 2007 PIA/GATF Continuous Improvement Network Annual Conference on how Pacific Bindery Services is using Lean SixSigma tools and techniques to deal with spoilage and waste in the bindery sector. Pacific Bindery Services, a three-time PIA/GATF Benny award winner was looking to reduce spoilage and teamed up with Lorne Patterson from Patterson + Associates to analyze processes, implement corrective actions, and eliminate variation throughout the organization.

Book Discussion - Re-Energizing Your Printing Business - Facilitated a discussion about what it takes to become a world-class manufacturing facility.The attendees at the PIA/GATF Continuous Improvement Conference shared their views on why diversification and implementation of quality system concepts is essential to stay competitive.

LeanSix Sigma – Bindery Operation - This is a project centered on eliminating spoilage from the operation. The firm is a three time Benny Award winner.
